A Users' Guide for Episcopalians
CHURCH FURNISHINGS are both functional and symbolical in Episcopal worship:
The Lord's Table, where the principle form of worship, the Holy Communion, is prepared, is called the ALTAR, reminding us of Christ's sacrifice for us, and our ‘sacrifice' or ourselves in thanksgiving & service.
The Lectern and Pulpit can be separate furnishings, one for reading the Bible and the prayers, and the other for preaching the sermon. Originally they were one piece of furniture, called the AMBO, as at St. Thomas' Parish. The CREDENCE TABLE, located near the altar, holds the bread, wine and the vessels for Eucharist; it is often covered by a white cloth, symbolizing purity.
