A Users' Guide for Episcopalians
"Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever."
Today's opening collect sets the tone: things are a bit more exuberant this Sunday, more light-hearted and cheery. We are at the mid-point of Advent, and the penitential character of the season is giving way to a little bit of joy.
In the Roman Church the third Advent Sunday is known as Guadete Sunday, which comes from the Introit of the Mass, which means praise in Latin. In today's gospel John's disciples ask Jesus who He is.
