The Episcopal Church is a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion, churches that trace their roots to the Church of England and practice a distinct form of Christianity, known as Anglicanism.
Walking a middle way between Roman Catholicism and Protestant traditions, we are a sacrament and worship oriented church that promotes thoughtful conversation about what God is calling us to do and be, as followers of Christ. We do not define ourselves by doctrine but by common worship.
Central to worship is Holy Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper. We believe God became flesh in Jesus. So we also believe God embraces us through earthly and material things like bread and wine, music, human touch, and all parts of creation.
The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) is our book of worship. The BCP provides common prayers and liturgies so that, regardless of differing beliefs, we may all worship as one.
Liturgy (literally: the work of the people) simply means a form and pattern for worship that gives it a rhythm that becomes comforting and familiar. For the first-time visitor, worship may be exhilarating...or confusing. We think of worship as a dance—once you learn the steps, it becomes satisfying to dance, again and again, even as the music changes.
