Katie Sherrod an Episcopalian blogger and independent writer/producer has posted a firsthand account of a sermon delivered by Bishop Gene Robinson at St. Mary Church, Putney in London, on her blog, Desert’s Child. Bishop Robinson

As he spoke, the roar of cameras clicking and the strobe of camera flashes filled the sacred space as the still photographers of the secular press took advantage of the 90 seconds granted them to take photos of the bishop of New Hampshire doing this radical thing -- preaching in a church in England.

The people listening were not distracted by the flashes and the noise. They were focused on Gene Robinson. The reaction of many to his simple words, "Lord, I feel like a boy," was immediate and powerful. Some closed their eyes. Some wiped their eyes. Some bowed their heads. Several nodded.

Gene Robinson is the Anglican Church’s only openly gay bishop. He alone of the Communion’s 800 bishops was denied an invitation to this week's Lambeth Conference. The Lambeth Conference is a decennial assembly of bishops of the Anglican Communion convened by the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is the one occasion when all bishops can meet for worship, study and conversation. Archbishops, diocesan, assistant and suffragan bishops are invited. Without an invitation, Bishop Robinson decided to travel at his own expense to Britain so that the bishops there could see what a gay Anglican looks like.

Despite being discouraged from preaching while in Britain, Bishop Robinson has been attending gatherings of pro-gay and liberal Anglicans including a meeting that was co-hosted by Sir Ian McKellen at Queen Elizabeth Hall. And on Sunday, July 13, gave the dramatic sermon described by Ms. Sherrod despite disruption by heckling.
