Synopsis: "Straight believers find a home in gay churches, synagogues"- By Tiffany Stanley
Although St. Thomas' Parish is not an official GLBT church, it has opened its arms to the diversity of the Dupont Circle, and Greater DC area. USA Today's Tiffany Stanley joined our congregation for service and singing, participating in our open choir, during the July 18th service. Researching an article entitled "Straight believers find a home in gay churches, synagogues," she observed St. Thomas' congregation, with a large gay community, as reaching out to all members and taking to heart our goal of "inclusion."
As part of her piece, Ms. Stanley interviewed Kristin Jones, a 25-year member of St. Thomas' community. Ms. Stanley's article stressed the generous welcome that Kristin, a single parent of two adopted daughters, has felt since joining St. Thomas.' Kristin has not felt marginalized as a part of this Christian community even though she is open about her heterosexuality! As Ms. Stanley puts it, St. Thomas' Parish took "a more organic approach as their surroundings changed." Never a place to adopt labels, St. Thomas' Parish's legacy of "radical hospitality" has been fairly, and duly, noted.
