Why I Volunteer at House of Ruth

Christine Parker Hunt with daughter GloriaHave you helped out at the House of Ruth yet? Or lately?

House of Ruth provides food and shelter to women and children in several locations around DC. A lot of the women have experienced domestic violence that have forced them to find a safe haven to stay for a time.
You may have seen House of Ruth signs or buildings around DC. Have you ever gone inside?

This is a place where you can do something so simple, so small but have a large impact on someone’s day.

Helping to prepare gallons of chili for 60-70 people is something tangible and complete as well as a fun adventure. And its done in about an hour and half.

The parishioners along side you….Jerry, Greg, Judson, John, Melissa…are fun to talk to with and share a part of your week with.

Pat, the official chef/cook in the kitchen gives tips and guidance and lots of “life” advice if you need it.

Compared to the typical work week where lots of projects go unfinished or don’t have tangible results or where you don’t feel appreciated… spending time in the House of Ruth kitchen makes up for it. You’ve been able to give, accomplish, produce and feel appreciated while you meet new people or reunite with old friends. And you still make it back to in time for coffee hour after the 11 o’clock service.

Interested?

Every third Sunday at 10am in the St. Thomas Parish lobby a group of us head out to the House of Ruth Madison House location on 10th Street, NE and help Pat in the kitchen for about an hour or so.

Call me or email me to sign up. We’d love to have you help us too.
