What I love most about today's Gospel reading from John is its directness. I often find scripture mired in hidden meanings, innuendo and references which often seem contradictory to modern-day interpretation or translation. Sometimes it's difficult to know what God really wants from us. John is mercifully clear, however, when delivering this message from Christ: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever."

Here, I have seen the love God intends for each of us. I have seen the special way children are cared for by each member. I have experienced the generous and sincere help offered and given to people during some of life's most painful experiences. Whether it is support for fellows suffering through depression, other illness, death, or any other crisis, St. Thomas has been there to give, to help, and to love. Parishioners are also here to share the happy moments. The joining of two lives in love, the coming of a child, birthdays, and giving thanks to our many wonderful fellows all these bring us closer to that which God desires.

Today I have been asked to share a little bit about my faith journey and the role St. Thomas has played in this journey. I would like to tell you about one special moment when I first attended a service at St. Thomas' that was special to me and showed the full acceptance of God's unconditional love. But first, let me tell you a little bit about my background to better explain the context of that special moment the first time I came to St. Thomas and shared communion with fellow believers in this community.

My how time flies! In about six weeks, Jesus has been born, grown in adulthood and in today's Gospel we hear about how Jesus is being tempted by the devil while in the desert. First the devil taunts Jesus to prove he really is the Son of God. At another point, the devil tempts Jesus by offering Him all the Kingdoms of the World if only He will fall down and worship the devil.....Virtually every day of our lives we to face temptation and our response to each situation is a small part in our ongoing spiritual journey. Today I have been invited to share with you, highlights of my spiritual journey over the years.

What does a Lenten sacrifice involve? Let's face it -- for many of us the answer is little or nothing and the more relevant question that comes to mind is, why bother? This year I had the opportunity to take a serious look at the subject of making a Lenten sacrifice as I prepared for my guest homilist role on the first Sunday in Lent. This article invites you to join me in my effort.
