Sometimes I get frustrated at work, when I think about all the things I can't accomplish. No, I'm not talking about making the federal tax system fairer or more equitable or easier to understand. I'm talking about all the things in the daily life of St. Thomas' parish that I can't reach out and accomplish in the personal ways that I wish I could.
In my work-a-day world, my Time and Talent for St. Thomas are really very limited. As I labor away inside my four walls of tax administration, I dream about what other people are actually doing to carry out St. Thomas’ missions. Proclaiming the Gospel. Pastoral care. Outreach to the DuPont Circle community and beyond. Education. Music. Caring for our sanctuary and grounds.
What I can’t do personally, because of my lack of Time and Talent, I can help to do through my Treasure. Yes, Treasure, the third “T” in the Stewardship Stool. Money doesn’t have to be big and glamorous and grand in order to qualify as Treasure. No, I think Treasure is money that comes from the heart. From wanting to support in a heart-felt way what St. Thomas’ parish is doing to proclaim the Gospel and all its other missions. That’s how I try to live into the Resurrection. That’s why I give.
