Last Sunday, Tim Johnson reminded all of us here at St.
Thomas' that we are fortunate enough to be drinking
from a well we did not dig. And this
Sunday, we are honoring those saints who came before us, such as the ones at
St. Thomas' who helped dig and maintain this proverbial well, so that we could
be here, drinking from it today, every Sunday, and every other time we gather
as a community in the name of the God, who is calling us into a deeper
relationship with himself and one another.
Now, it is our turn to be faithful stewards of this gift to
us, and the choice is a simple one. I'm
reminded of the "Parable of the Talents," where the slave who was given five
talents by the master traded with them and made five more talents, and, in the
same way, the one who had received two talents made two more talents. However, the one who had been entrusted with
one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's
money. Now, as you all know, when the
master returned to settle accounts with his slaves, he was pleased with the
first two but furious with the third, who had not been a faithful steward of
that which had been entrusted to him.
So, will we choose to take this gift of St.
Thomas' and hide it, handing it off to the next
generation in the same condition in which we received it? Will
we keep this light for ourselves, unwilling or unable to share it fully with
others? Remember our charge: "You are
the light of the world....No one after lighting a lamp puts in under the bushel
basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the
same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good
works and give glory to your Father in heaven."
Those saints in-waiting-whether they are currently enjoying brunch on 17th
Street but realize something important is missing in their lives, whether they
are sitting at home alone, wondering whether anybody loves them, or whether
they haven't even been born yet-are watching...and wondering.
