bellmichael.jpgI have been a regular attendee at St. Thomas' for about two or three years, although I discovered St. Thomas’ almost ten years ago. I currently serve on the Altar Guild and the Building and Grounds Committee, and I also serve as a reader and Eucharistic minister. Last fall, I was asked to serve out Strother Murray's term on the Vestry. It has been a challenging and rewarding experience that has deepened my love for this great community of ours at St. Thomas'. I would be deeply honored to continue serving St. Thomas' for the next three years.

I was born in South Carolina on April 25, 1972, and I grew up in the very small town of Bishopville, nestled among cotton and tobacco fields, pine forests and swamps. I lived in South Carolina until I graduated from Clemson University in 1994, where I studied political science (after a brief stint at the School of Architecture). I went on to receive a master’s degree in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia in 1996. After living in northern Virginia for three years and working for a nonprofit professional society, I decided to return to the University of Virginia for law school. I have been an associate in the securities regulation and enforcement group of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP since 2002.

And, now, a hodge-podge of miscellany about me: I am politically progressive and politically active. I also enjoy foreign travel and studying foreign languages. I’ve studied French, German, Turkish and Arabic, but I’ve never mastered any of them, so I only know enough to get myself into trouble. I’m a self-described “foodie” who loves dining at great restaurants, but I’m also a vegetarian, so pickings are sometimes slim. I am interested in postmodern theology, history (especially 16th century English history), photography, good films and … bad television. Last, but certainly not least, is my French bulldog, Bruno. My former partner and I have joint custody, because neither of us could bear to give him up in the settlement. Keep an eye out for Bruno at our annual Blessing of the Animals services!
