Each individual has a different way of expressing their
faith. Some parishioners volunteer at House of Ruth or one of our many other
Outreach Committee events. Others express their faith through music, greeting
the congregation with their gifts during Sunday morning service. And yet others
choose to give the gift of their words. They are the many Voices of St.
Thomas'.
From rectors to lay leaders and visitors, their thought provoking work guides
parishioners on their spiritual journey.

We've traveled quite a distance these last six weeks -- from the beginning of Advent when the incarnation was not a clear figment of our imagination, to now the manger-full of squirming, all too human baby-Jesus....What must it be like, I've often wondered, for God to see out through the eyes that she had created, to smell the very rose to which she had given not just color but scent? This is what we mean by Incarnation, and it's God's flesh-taking arrival that we prepared ourselves for during Advent, and celebrate from Christmas Eve throughout the entire 12 days of Christmas.

There is an interesting phenomenon that goes on this time of year: people do not know what to say, particularly to a priest, in regard to a holiday greeting. Before I was ordained, I always found it interesting to observe who had trouble deciding what to say: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. Some folks are real clear, stick their hand out and say Merry Christmas, others are as clear with Happy Holidays, and then there is the vast middle ground where people start with Happy Holidays, now see my collar and get to Merry Christmas. It is kind of like a HapMer Holmas.

I’ve always been inspired by art—the full spectrum from whimsical refrigerator magnets to wrapping papers to internationally acclaimed masterpieces. Religious art, from stained glass windows to adornments that wrap our liturgy with beauty, is a silent language revealing culture, history, theology and personal faith. If you accept this as so, what would you say we believe about Joseph, the central figure in our gospel today, as revealed by centuries of artists?

I am fortunate that I can look back to a special Christmas of sorts that helps to keep me grounded and keep everything in perspective. It was the August of 2006. I was fortunate enough to be able to have taken a sabbatical and was in New Orleans for two weeks....On one of the days that I was there, the Church where I was spending my time sent me out on the Loaves and Fishes truck. Each day members of the parish would volunteer and make sandwiches and this very cool truck was outfitted much like the sidewalk venders and they gave out food.

The Psalmist, and Isaiah, and Paul and Matthew all share this vision of something new breaking in during this season we call Advent - a season of the odd-pairings of reality and possibility that up to now has existed only in the world of dreamers. Advent is the season of wondering, wondering what it would it take for us to believe in, and bring into being, a world where such unlikely pairings would exist not just in dreams and visions, but real in our lifetime?
